6 May - Batumi (Georgia)

The clocks went forward 1 hour when we entered Georgia so we are 3 hours ahead of the UK. Petrol is 71p/litre and diesel 72p/litre with driving being on the left.

It was St.George’s Day and so a public holiday. I was told that here are many St. George's Days during the year so that is probably why everything was open as normal. It must have been a good day for weddings as well as the wedding cars all had their horns blowing as they drove through the town.

The shoreline of Batumi looks a little like Las Vegas what with huge new flashy hotels and casinos, new public buildings and accommodation blocks.

I was more interested in the older parts of the town so wandered round the bay to the docks part. Not much to be seen there, the cable car to the mountain had not started for the day when I passed by, so I just wandered along the railway line which went through the old part of town, just looking at things.

Dinner in the evening was in a local fish cafe near the hotel, point out the fish required, the cost was shown on the calculator and the price agreed before cooking. Salad and bread was supplied as part of the meal. The only alternatives on the menu were the type of fish, nothing else. The young girl waitress practised her English on me while I waited for the very fresh fish to be cooked.
