1 May - Goreme (Turkey)

Tom, the youngest on the trip, was 24 today. He was allowed to tale it a little easier working around the truck meals today. A tour for us all had been arranged by Odyssey so off we went with a very very good local guide for 61/2 hours sight-seeing around Goreme.

The province of Cappadocia is known for growing wheat, lentils, potatoes, sheep and cows. But it is mainly known for the Fairy Chimneys, cave dwellings and churches.

YERAEH SEHRI UNDERGROUND CITY

This was first constructed by the Hittites from 2500 to 1500BC. It was excavated further in the Byzantine Period when, between the 8 and 11 century it was dug down to 8 levels at 60 metres below ground. The city was used for people to hide when attackers were in the area but were not actually lived in for any period over a month so it is thought. It was not built/dug as a comfortable place to live and access was from secret doors in houses and churches, most being sealed by a circular stone which was rolled into the door way. One door in particular was of a quartz which could be heated and then copper melted in depressions in the stone to be used for weapons and cooking utensils. The city has not been used since the 11th century and since then 90% of the tunnels had been silted up. At the present moment only 4 floors can be reached and the 4th floor is 37 metres below the surface.
